Olympiacos slumped to only their second defeat of the season on Sunday as OFI Crete celebrated their first league win, stunning the Pireaus "giants" 1-0 at the Theodoros Vardinogiannis Stadium in Irakleio.

Dijilly Vouho deservedly opened the scoring for underdogs OFI after 35 minutes, with the home side enjoying the better of the match in an impressive opening 45 minutes in which they club’s players harried and chased every lost cause.

And Olympiacos came back at the hosts in the second half and missed a couple of decent chances to equalise, OFI clung on to taste the sweetest of victories against their illustrious opponents.

Questions will no doubt be begin to be raised about the future of coach Pedro Martins after such a damaging loss, with Olympiacos stuck in fourth place and now already six points adrift of leaders PAOK.

THE MATCH

OFI went into the match without a win in their previous six matches and with just two points on the board, but that form did not match the quality and determination on show in an impressive first half from Nikos Papadopoulos’ side.

The Cretans were clearly revved up for the visit of their illustrious rivals from Piraeus, with forward Vangelis Platellas skillfully leaving Olympiacos defender Kostantinos Tsimikas in his wake before sending a shot flashing past the post.

A wayward effort from Yaya Toure was all Olympiacos could muster up to the half-hour mark, and as the home side continued to press forward, the breakthrough finally came in the 35th minute.

It came from a neat piece of play from defender Nikos Korovesis, who made headway down the right flank before sending over a perfect cross for Ivory Coast striker Vouho to head home unmarked.

Tsimikas hit the crossbar with a cross-shot two minutes before half-time as the visitors sought to level the match, and there were plenty of chances for Olympiacos to get back on level terms in the second half.

However, Miguel Angel Guerrero and Bibras Natcho on two occasions failed to beat OFI custodian Giorgos Strezos as the home side held firm for three vital points and a result which leaves Olympiacos with plenty of red faces all round.
