Federico Macheda converted a late penalty to salvage a 1-1 draw for Panathinaikos against OFI on the road in the Super League

Panathinaikos looked to be heading towards their first league defeat since October when Joao Figueiredo scored for OFI and Bart Schenkeveld received a red card, but, with time fast running out, Macheda converted a penalty to rescue a point for the Athenians.

As a result of their draw, Panathinaikos move up to fifth position of the Super League table, two points behind fourth-placed OFI.

At the weekend, OFI travel to rock-bottom Panetolikos, while Panathinaikos welcome Aris to the Olympic Stadium in the capital.

THE MATCH

OFI, playing in front of a typically passionate home crowd, made the faster start with Figueiredo twice threatening from promising positions.

Panathinaikos, however, dealt with OFI’s early pressing well, slowing the pace of the game as proceedings became littered with fouls. The Prasini began creating chances too, as Giannis Bouzoukis was denied by an alert Dimitris Sotiriou.

In the 28th minute, Macheda thought he had given Panathinaikos the lead, but his marker was chalked off for offside. Figueiredo later had a goal disallowed for the same reason with the first half coming to a close.

Panathinaikos fully took the initiative in the second half. Seven minutes after the break, Emanuel Insua came close to finally breaking the deadlock, but his effort was stopped by Sotiriou.

Christos Donis rattled the bar for the visitors in the 60th minute as their pressure grew.

Panathinaikos were on the front foot, but, almost out of nothing, OFI struck first blood.

Figueiredo, escaping his marker inside the box, connected with Kosmas Tsilianidis’ cross to tuck the ball past Sokratis Dioudis.

Matters took a major turn for the worse in the 70th minute for Panathinaikos, as Schenkeveld was dismissed for a second bookable offence.

The odds were stacked against Panathinaikos. Nevertheless, with time ticking down, Donis was fouled in the area by ex-Panathinaikos defender Giorgos Koutroubis, and Macheda stepped up to convert the ensuing spot-kick.

Moments later, Dimitris Kourbelis could have even snatched an unlikely victory for Panathinaikos, but the visitors had to be content with a thrilling draw.
