OFI narrowly avoided relegation last season, but in scoring plenty of goals and achieving positive results, they have made a wonderful start to the 2019/2020 Super League campaign.

The Heraklion-based outfit came incredibly close to relegation earlier this year. In a dramatic playoff tie against Cretan rivals Platanias, OFI were 60 seconds away from suffering demotion to the Super League 2, but Adil Nabi curled a clever free-kick into the net to save their top-flight lives.

Yes, OFI were on the brink of relegation and faced lots of problems throughout the entire season, but they consistently played a bright, exciting and attacking brand of football with the likes of Felipe Souza and Juan Neira standing out. In the summer, Giorgos Simos replaced Jaime Vera as the OFI head coach, however the Cretans have continued playing entertaining football. An opinion which is backed up by statistics.

Six matches, 13 points, 14 goals scored, six conceded. Interestingly, OFI have scored more goals in the Super League than anyone else so far, with PAOK scoring 13, Olympiacos tallying 12 and AEK only hitting the back of the net on nine occasions. In stark contrast, Panathinaikos have only scored four goals to date, and three of them were from the penalty spot.

Boasting 13 points from the opening six games, OFI have made their best start to the national championship since the 1999/2000 season when the legendary Eugene Gerards was at the helm. OFI also had 13 points on the board after the first six matches of that particular season.

The manner in which OFI are winning matches is just as impressive as the results themselves. Utilising their attacking talents, OFI love to take the initiative against their opponents, applying incessant pressure and creating several chances. Here is a full list of OFI’s results so far:

Aris - OFI - 1-1

Panathinaikos - OFI - 1-3

OFI - Panetolikos - 3-1

Volos NFC - OFI - 1-0

OFI - Asteras Tripolis - 3-1

OFI - Panionios - 4-1

The win against Panathinaikos at the Olympic Stadium, in which Dimitris Manos - twice - and Kosmas Tsilianidis struck gold, hinted that OFI mean business. The prolific Manos, who has rejoined OFI on loan from Olympiacos after a troubled spell in Piraeus, is a key figure in attack and has scored three goals. Fellow striker Tsilianidis has been a revelation with four goals.

OFI are displaying the potential which they possess. If they continue playing such scintillating football with equally good results, they could even qualify for the championship group, however they will find it difficult to maintain this level of consistency. On Saturday, OFI travel to the Karaiskakis Stadium to face giants Olympiacos, and if they emerge from Piraeus with anything to show for their efforts it will be a major statement.
