In the Cretan Derby, Ergotelis sprung a surprise, defeating Super League club OFI 2:1 after a penalty shootout to advance to the 2018/2019 Greek Cup quarter-finals.

With the score locked at 1:1 from the first leg at the Pankritio Stadium, OFI boasted the away goal advantage, however they were behind within 23 minutes at home. A penalty on the stroke of half time levelled proceedings, but after OFI missed two further penalties in the second half, Ergotelis clung on to eventually win 4:3 in the ensuing shootout.

Ergotelis broke the deadlock in brilliant fashion. Outside of the penalty area, Giannis Boutsakis shaped for a shot, lashing a fantastic attempt beyond the flailing dive of OFI goalkeeper Dimitris Sotiriou to give the visitors the crucial lead.

OFI were in trouble, and just after the half hour mark, they found themselves down to 10 men when Vasilis Koutsianikoulis was shown a second yellow card for a reckless, needless challenge. Things were looking bleak for the hosts, but 60 seconds before the break, Juan Neira levelled from the penalty spot after a clumsy foul from Ergotelis defender Konstantinos Oikonomou in the box.

On 59 minutes, OFI were handed a second penalty when Antonis Bourselis hacked down an opponent, but this time, Neira was denied by away goalkeeper Dimitris Katsimitros.

Incredibly, just 12 minutes later, OFI received a third penalty. Instead of Neira, Giannis Potouridis decided to try his luck, but he contrived to thrash his effort against the woodwork to keep an increasingly dramatic game level.

Ergotelis were living dangerously, but to their credit, they improved after those two missed penalties and kept OFI at bay to take the tie all the way to penalties

During the 120 minutes, OFI had already missed two penalties, and they fluffed their lines twice in the ensuing shootout while Ergotelis scored four of their five attempts. Giannis Iatroudis, Christos Batzios, Ilias Tselios, Joseph Efford and Manolis Rovithis all hit the jackpot to keep Ergotelis’ Greek Cup campaign alive, but OFI will be wondering just how they lost a tie which was seemingly there for the taking.
Meanwhile, OFI Crete signed Giorgos Giakoumakis from AEK.
In July 2017, Giakoumakis joined AEK from Platanias, however the striker has struggled to make any sort of impression in Athens. Since signing for AEK, the 24-year-old forward has only scored one Super League goal, with that particular marker being the winner against Olympiacos in Piraeus in February 2018.

Asides from that famous moment at the Karaiskakis Stadium. Giakoumakis hasn’t had much to cheer about with the Kitrinomavri, and AEK have now sent him on loan to OFI until June 30, 2019. OFI confirmed his arrival with this following statement:

“OFI 1925 FC can confirm the arrival of Giorgos Giakoumakis from AEK until June. Our team also has the option to purchase him on a permanent basis.

He will wear the number 10. Welcome to the OFI family, Giorgos!”

In an interview with OFI, Giakoumakis shared his feelings from the move: “It was my decision to come here and AEK respected my wishes. Having grown up here, I understand the size of OFI, and as a child I often came to the stadium to see the team play. My targets? First of all, I want to help OFI stay in the Super League, and I’m eager to score goals in order to assist the team. We need immediate results.”

This season, Heraklion born Giakoumakis made 11 appearances for AEK across all competitions, with his only goal coming in the Greek Cup.
