OFI Crete fought back from a goal behind to defeat Aris 3-1 at the Yedi Kule stadium in Heraklion on Saturday.

Brown Ideye had given Aris an early lead, but Georgios Simos’ side battled manfully to get back on level terms through Ricardo Vaz. It was all OFI from that point onwards, and the Cretans sealed the three points thanks to two goals in as many minutes from Felipe Souza and Vitor Figuieredo.

The win saw OFI climb above AEK into third spot, one point ahead of the Kitrinomavri ahead of their away match against Xanthi, while Aris remain seventh with 18 points from 14 matches.

THE MATCH

With OFI seemingly not in a hurry to threaten early on, it was Aris who took the initiative, and the Thessaloniki club opened the scoring after 12 minutes. Fraz Velez intercepted possession and released Brown Ideye, who scored with a clinical side-footed finish.

That goal sparked OFI into life and they set about trying to find an equalizer with gusto. Their reward was a goal on the half-hour mark, and a beautifully-worked one too. Following a slick passing move, Nikos Korovesis squared the ball for Vaz to slot home clinically.

OFI then dominated proceedings from them on in, missing a couple of opportunities either side of half time, before two goals in two minutes saw the clinch the points.

First, on 71 minutes Aris goalkeeper Julian Cuesta made a fatal error or judgement in coming off his lie to try and block Vajebah Sakor’s shot. The ball ricocheted off Velez and Souza was on hand to score and make it 2-1.

Then on 73 minutes it was game over for Aris when Kosmas Tsilianidis played an inch perfect pass through for Figuieredo, and the Portuguese made no mistake in clipping the ball beyond the hapless Cuesta.
