SuperLeague outfit OFI Crete and Football League club Platanias played out an exciting goalless draw at the Perivolia Municipal Stadium in Chania on Sunday in the first leg of their promotion/relegation playoff clash.
OFI, who finished 13th in the SuperLeague in the recently-completed season, met their match in fellow Cretan outfit Platanias, with the home side hitting the woodwork after 70 minutes through Vasilios Karagounis.
And in an open match played at a frantic pace at times, OFI came close to take the first-leg advantage with four minutes remaining. Defender Tasos Papazoglou rose highest to head a Thanasis Dinas corner goalwards, only to see the ball cannon off the left post and bounce to safety.
That meant the scores stayed locked at 0-0 heading into the second leg of what has been dubbed the “Battle of Crete”, which will take place in Irakleio at OFI’s Theodoros Vardinogiannis Stadium on Wednesday.
